The Fruit and Vegetables Unit was established in 1988 by the National Dairy Development Council, a nationally important institute established by the Indian Government, with the aim of establishing a direct link between producers and consumers of fruit and vegetables. The unit relied on the NDDB's strengths to develop its state-of-the-art, state-of-the-art central distribution center with three decades of experience in the dairy sector.

It is currently owned by Mother Dairy Food Processing Ltd., a wholly-owned corporation of Mother Dairy Fruit & Vegetable Ltd. In April 2000, Mother Dairy Fruit & Vegetable Ltd was established as a subsidiary of the BNDD. The processed products of the unit are marketed under the brand name 'SAFAL'

Complex unit is located on 22 acres of land. It includes a prefabricated building with cold rooms with different sets of temperature and humidity conditions to store various fruits and vegetables. It includes rooms with controlled atmosphere and maturation rooms, freezing rooms, a preparation room, a treatment room, a shipping hall, a reception, shipping facilities, etc. Material handling is carried out in specially designed plastic crates using forklifts.
