The many varieties of oats today have evolved over the centuries from wild grass. The best quality oats are grown on light, fertile soil and will grow in most areas with a moderate climate and rainfall over 60 cm (24 in) per year. The main oat producing regions are the United States, Canada, the USSR, West Germany, France, Australia, Scandinavia and the United Kingdom.

Mornflake oatmeal is produced from cereals grown on farms in England, Scotland and Wales, and many of them are grown under contract on the same farms year after year.

The oat grain is grown and matured in the fields and goes directly from the field to the oat miller. You can recognize an oat field as the grains appear in clusters called panicles on graceful stems. An oat plant reaches a height of about 90 cm (3 feet) and each stem carries about twenty to twenty-five grains of oats. Each panicle contains two or three grains and each grain is covered with an envelope that protects it to the mill.
